Q: What is the difference between STEP (Siskiyou Training & Employment Program, Inc.) and the Workforce Connection?
A: Siskiyou Training & Employment Program, Inc. (STEP) is a private non-profit and the contracted service provider of Workforce Investment Act (WIA) funded programs and services in Siskiyou County. The Workforce Connection is not a legal entity - it is a partnership of local agencies with the primary active partners being STEP and Siskiyou County Human Services Department. The goal of the partners is to deliver services to job seekers and businesses through the One-Stop Community Employment Centers located in Weed and Yreka.
Q: How do I file for unemployment insurance benefits?
A: Call 1-800-300-5616, or file on-line by clicking the link on the CalJOBS home page (www.caljobs.ca.gov), or visit your nearest office, and staff will provide you with a form that can be filled out; they can also fax the form for you. Q: Is STEP-Your Workforce Connection a “Temp” agency?
A: No. We assist in job search through EDD using the CalJOBS computer database for job seekers and employer job listings.
Q: What services do you offer?
A: We offer:
- Assistance with job search
- Internet access
- Résumé writing
- Photocopy service
- Fax & phone service
- Typing certification
- GED preparation
- Computerized software tutorials
- Friendly staff to assist you
A: Usually, it will take one hour for work registration and résumé development.
A: We offer a variety of software programs and on-line career assessment web sites which you may explore. EDD provides labor market information about careers that customers may want to explore.
Q: Do you provide training?
A: Yes. Training services are designed to equip our customers to enter the workforce and retain employment. The services are based on the customer’s ability to meet eligibility program requirements and demonstrate a need for training. Your goal must be successful employment in a demand occupation.
Q: Can you assist with relocation?
A: Yes. Relocation services are designed to help our customers remain in the workforce. This service is based on the customer’s ability to meet eligibility program requirements. You must demonstrate the need for relocation.
Q: Do you offer GED preparation and/or testing?
A: Yes. GED preparation and/or testing services are made available to customers based on the customer’s ability to meet eligibility program requirements. You must demonstrate the need for these services.
Q: How long does it take to go through the GED preparation course work?
A: The length of time to prepare will depend on the basic skills level of the customer and the amount of time the customer can commit each week to the lessons.
Q: Are there any other educational options besides GED?
A: There is enrollment in a charter school (to get a diploma), or you may test for the California Proficiency Exam (similar to the GED).

Q: What are the office hours?
A: We are open, Monday through Friday, 8:30am - 12:00pm and 1:00pm - 5:00pm. Please call our office or check our calendar for exceptions and possible closure due to holidays, trainings, and/or inclement weather.
